She’s the sky-scraper inhabited, bagel chomping, coffee swigging, yellow-cab’in, cocktail’n capital of the world.  The native New Yorker, may grimace at the inherent, stereotypical ideologies that is bestowed upon their home town.  Deal.WithIt. WeLoveNYC.

In 2010, I took a trip to the city that doesn’t sleep and was immediately hooked on her charm, arrogance and beauty.  It’s a grown-ups playground.  Forget that ‘slot-machine’ in Nevada.  NEW YORK is where it’s at!

When it comes to music however, I have a few words.  We had pre-booked tickets for Circoloco at District36.  The loony-loony clown from DC-10, was going to be opening the Midtown Garment District’s former 14,000 sq ft warehouse on Halloween weekend.  Yer, about that.  It seems that the licence distributors in NYC are about as efficient as that chocolate teapot your great great nanny gave you last fall (Autumn, this is plugged at our American readers).  Suffice to say, D36, did not open.  We are sad to say that since then, this iconic venue opened and closed.  Boo.

We were left with a conundrum??  Do we head with the masses to Webster Hall?  Nah!  We headed for a hotel in somewhere (was $45 in a cab, although I think we may have done a few detours), we landed at The Dog & Pony Show.  Halloween was saved, 4 hours of Butch was enough to satisfy the techno drought we had felt.  #happiness. The Dog & Pony show, is a brand that would fit in SOOOOOO well over here in the UK; their playful take on a tech-house event is exactly what the UK is in need of right now.  This small trip was however top-trumped by a VERY special night…

After a Heathrow-JFK flight, where they (I) managed to drink all the whiskey, we dragged ourselves out to the Funky Buddha for cocktails, before tickling Plunge at the Roosevelt (seriously, sort those fucking prices out). Then it was time, down the lift, across the road, to the most unassuming venue I have ever seen.  Literally, a door.  I love it.  We had arrived, Cielo.  We got to see a techno GOD, father of the Old School and original Bad Boy, Carl Cox!!! He was on all night for the brand Dance.Here.Now.  And did we dance! Seeing a DJ who normally plays to crowds in excess of 40,000, in a venue with a capacity of 325 (Rolling Stone), is mind-blowing.  The tight door policy at the venue means there is no VIP, which ensures that those in, are there for 1 reason.  TheMusic.

FastForward…………….. It’s 2015! What does the NYC dance music scene look like?   Well.  Good.  With a line-up of venues that includes: Pacha, Space, Cielo, Marquee,  ‘must-visit’- System over in Long Island, and Brooklyn’s Output,  the music savvy tourist (or local if you are reading this stateside), is treated to menagerie of venues offering the best in electronic music.  Space has on it’s upcoming books: Jamie Jones, Danny Avila, Victor Calderone.  Pacha is serving up the house massive with the likes of: Fatman Scoop, Chuckie, Thomas Gold, Paul Van Dyk.  Cielo has the phenomenon that is Louie Vega, DJ Sneak, Santana, Louis Vega & Sleepy & Bo!!!!  The Marquee has on it’s books one half of Deep Dish, Sharam and Sasha to name but a few.  Output continues to be at forefront of underground house and techno, offering The Martinez Bros., Art Department, Seth Troller and John Digweed.  Oh they also have the fierce machine herself, MAGDA on their listings. System, continues to be THE AFTER-HOURS venue in town.  We have heard, the short trip over to Long Island to this 5am start-party, will be THE highlight of your trip.  Their upcoming after hours sessions include Anthony Cardinale and Joe Grossman!  They do also a ‘normal hours’ party to satisfy the masses.

ThePromotion team behind these events work tirelessly to ensure that the music experience you will receive in the City that doesn’t sleep, is paramount.  We say, Go.See.Dance. (For the love of God, get to a Dance.Here.Now. event). P1010336psd
