Throughout their 9 year residency in the city, Cream Birmingham’ve delivered some truly memorable events.  In the last few years, we have seen the addition of the Ibiza Carnival; in which the islands biggest and finest have been invited over to join in the fun.  This year was no exception.  The 2015 Ibiza Carnival had a lot to live up to.  It’s predececent was amazing, however, this years brought us something else; courtesy of The Rainbow Venues:  a terrace.

Truth be told, 2 people in different times, would be forgiven for mistaking that the events were held in polar opposite venues.   This be false!  What the Rainbow has done, is carve every single inch of its cavernous bowls out, redesign, move, re-tile, plaster, tinkle and twist, and add a phenomenal roof terrace to boot.  Weloveit.

When we arrived, Steve Crane was playing the terrace and laying down ‘So Good’ – Miguel Migs (deluxe main mix).  This dubby house monster is on-point and defines the music genre of present.  Gone are the ultra-minimal warmup sets or big room track thieves; tracks like this enables an early set dj to define the night and deliver the crowd with a set that excites.  And he did.  WeLoveSteve.

Over in the warehouse, local boy and Cream Resident Rue Jay was laying down a classics set, with Nagasaki’s ‘I Need a Lover’ showing the huarache masses a thing or 2 about what a classic is! Back onto the terrace, Ibiza legend Brandon Block was playing to a now rammed sun-soaked terrace, his set included the sublime ‘Want You In My Soul’ by Lovebirds, with the sun setting in the distance and hoards of happy smily faces, it was simply perfection.

The sunset-set however, was driven by the one and only Jonathan Ulyses.  The London born, Space Ibiza resident was simply breathtaking.  As the midlands daylight turned to night, he blasted out the remix of the 1992 hit by CeCe Rogers – ‘No Love Lost’, it’s rework by Skye’N’Sugarstarr was the ideal track to send the wanting masses into the heavier side of the musical menu on offer.

In the main room Cream Birmingham delivered a headline act to match any: Sandy Rivera.   With a back catalogue like Sandy’s, it’s no wonder that the warehouse filled to capacity in a very short time.  His set included classics from his Deep Vision Records label as well as other bootleg and choice cuts that kept the warehouse fucking moving.  He chopped up and looped and flanged Jay Lumen’s ‘Street Stuff’.  WeDanced.  Nuff said.  It was brilliance, we had been treated to a pre-set by one of our favourites Jason Herd, and the warehouse was more than ready to receive it’s headline act.  Kudos to George Kafetzis for bringing this legend to the midlands.

Back up to the terrace for a very special lady!!! Trade aficionado and first lady of tech-house, Smokin’ Jo!  Her deep. dubby, tech-house style was just what the crowd needed after a day in the sun!!  She rocked! The main warehouse was closed by a Birmingham favourite Ross Cobe.  After being at the venue for 14 hours, we were starting to fall by the wayside – then Ross started.  HELLO!!  The local lad played a belter of a set and held the attention of the warehouse (and us), right into the early hours!  Definitely one to watch.

The mixture of styles that Cream Birmingham brings to their line-ups brings a diversity to each space, it’s one of the reasons WeBelieve it to be so successful, and by bringing Smoking’ Jo and Pirupa and Hoxton Whores and K-Klass and Harry White and Jason Herd and Sandy Rivera and Jason Bye (others acknowledged) all together on 1 night is tantamount to the dedication of a team prepared to deliver a night that meets the needs of all who attend.  We have to take our hats off to the team at the Rainbow and especially the team at Freedom Security, who ensured that once again an event can run smoothly and without ANY trouble.  Amazing work boys!
