Filler sets, warm-up’s, stand-in’s, step-up’s for no-show DJ’s and closings, one person is guaranteed to be there to keep any party rocking… The Resident.

Often overlooked, the resident DJ can literally be the glue that holds the night together.  In the past, clubs have relied solely on the technical brilliance of its resident DJ’s.

Back in 1970, the late Frankie Knuckles moved from NYC to Chicago – he began to play sets at Warehouse.  Soon, he became resident at the venue, playing to the musically educated week in week out and the concept of a ‘resident’ DJ has never faded.

The ‘90’s (aah let’s reminisce about that for a while), had a splurge of nights that held their residents with high admiration, Hacienda had Dave Haslam, Back to Basics had Dave Beer, Tall Paul & Sister Bliss were the darlings over at The Gallery and the now legendary Danny Rampling held court at Shoom.  The harder edge of the house genre however, held their residents with greater accolade.  Sundissential’s early days saw it’s 4 main residents, Nick Rafferty, Andy Farley, Paul Kershaw and Lisa Lashes, often appear on ‘Residential’ nights, celebrating the 4 pillars of the loony loony circus that was the night and the late Tony de Vit was Trade’s captain, navigating the bare chested masses from 4am till beyond and then some!

On 2nd August, the Ibiza Carnival returns to Birmingham.  Hosted by Cream Birmingham, for the past 8 years they have been throwing parties in the city, at some of the best venues the 2nd city has to offer.  Behind the headliners, perfomers and PA’s have been 3 men.  The Residents. George Kafetzis, Mike Catherall and Phillip Tomaz (Silhouett3) and lets not forget Jonze who was one of two that started it all off, as part of the original Cream Birmingham line-up Andrew Jonze was and has been instrumental in the success of the brand in Birmingham.

Mike Catherall & Phillip Tomaz are 2 names from the North that have played on some of the biggest stages in house music.  Catherall’s now legendary sets at Hed Kandi and Tomaz’s thundering tech-house sets, leave us in no doubt of the talent that is displayed by these residents.  The pair are responsible for Shakedown in Manchester and continue to please at their residencies.  For Cream Birmingham, they have been there since the beginning and continue to deliver amazing sets. At the last event, we saw these pair play a Back 2 Back set that literally blew us away! GET YOURSELF IN FRONT OF THESE DJ’S AND GET READY TO BE BLOWN AWAY!!!

Production wise, Tomaz (Silhouett3), has been making waves in the industry of late.  With jaZNo being signed by Hotfingers and System, the future is bright for the Manchester producer!

Nights come and go; DJ’s become popular and go, clubs open and shut.  One thing that remains constant is the resident, be it at the local Ritzy or a superclub, they will be there, ready with a box of vinyl, a cd wallet and a USB stick, ready to ensure the night goes on.  WeLoveYou.  For those of you that aren’t in Ibiza this summer, we can assure you that the Cream Team in Brum will ensure that a little of the White Isle’s magic is sprinkled upon you on August 2nd, if previous shows are anything to go by, these 3 residents will ensure that from the first crackle of a track to the last beat will be hedonistic and euphoric.   Feel the music, see the event and witness The Residents.
